Dan Rather -- Paris Hilton Root of All Media Evil

Dan Rather continued his blowhard tour today, blaming the "dumbing down" and "tarting up" of news -- as he has put it -- on Paris Hilton and the media's blanket coverage of the heiress' jail travails.

Talking to FOX News, Rather slammed the wall-to-wall Paris-in-the-slammer coverage, criticizing his ex-bosses at CBS News for running Hilton stories on the evening news. "There's no empirical evidence that by going with Paris Hilton that [the newscast] attracts a younger audience," said Rather.

Rather tried to deflect criticism of news coverage from his replacement, Katie Couric, to his ex-boss, CBS CEO Les Mooves -- and now, inevitably, to Paris. Kenneth, what's the frequency?

32. Although I've always been a Katie Couric supporter, Dan Rather is nearly right on all fronts. We do have a "dumbing down" in America and the news media needs to return to serious journalism! If American's do not become more serious about what is happening at home, we're soon going to be more shocked than, yet, imaginable!

While we have all been distracted with unimportant (people) stories, it allows the more critical issues facing our country from being addressed. Please get proactive regarding the 2008 Presidential Election!!!!

33. Dan Rather said it like it is! Call me an idealist but I LOVE that man!!!

Anderson Cooper and a few others around him are the new guys that I respect as well. In more subtle ways they say the same thing as Dan.

34. It's embarrassing for Les Moonves because it was his giant ego that demanded CBS News hire Katie, against all advice that she wasn't right.
He shouldn't have listened to that pillow talk from Julie Chen.

35. What Dan Rather said was true. It wasnt sexist, it was spot on. And TMZ, when did you become so enamoured with Paris Hilton. Jesus Christ. While your up her ass, say hello to that jackass Perez Hilton for me.

36. I take issue with the last paragraph. Dan Rather did NOT "try to deflect criticism" from his remarks about Katie Couric because he did NOT criticize HER. Dan Rather was trying to clarify what he said and he was having a difficult time not because he couldn't find the right words but because Fox was trying to continue dig a hole that wasn't there.

It is called Fox SPIN.

It was not a "blowhard tour" for Dan Rather trying to defend himself.

It was not about Paris Hilton either. It was about empty news stories while ignoring
our humongous national problems.

It was about that fact that news has slid in the mud of not even very interesting entertainment.

40. Rather is right. Give the man his props. He's not disgruntled. He's just telling the truth. Don't buy into the hype. Personally, if Dan Rather were on IV's and a bed pan in a hospital, I'd prefer to get my news from him, rather than cheerleader, prom queen Katie Couric. And yes, Paris Hilton doesn't belong on mainstream news, her story should be on entertainment focused shows. I assure you, while I find following celebrity gossip entertaining, Paris Hilton is not the most important thing going on in our country.

41. Dan Rather is right...This country has warped values. Who gives two turds about Paris Hilton ANYWAY? What has SHE contributed to society? The problem with Paris, Britney and Lindsay are their mothers. Their mothers must be awful immoral bitches, that they didnt teach their girls right from wrong growing up. Their mothers are pigs too...The apples dont fall far from the tree.

42. 20. Hey you guys, Al Gore has been saying the same thing.

Our priorities are all wrong...care about your country, not about Paris.

Posted at 3:42PM on Jun 13th 2007 by alright Dan

Al Gore is the last person I will take advice from about caring about my country. This is a man who uses more energy in one month the the rest of us use in a year. Please dont tote that moronic hypocrites views to the rest of us. With that being said, you are right about not caring about Paris Hilton. Dan Rather is right as far as the news has become nothing better then a cheap rag magazine. There was also a day when newspeople kept their opinions to themselves and were fair and unbiased with the reporting and interviews. That is a thing of the past. I think Barbara Walters just showed exactly how the media reacts as far as trying to garner ratings. She scored an interview with Paris in "jail" and now shes waiting gleefully for the afterjail interview. So now shes all up the Hilton family's butt kissing it as hard and fast as Harvey Levin. This woman has interviewed generals, kings, princesses and presidents yet she willingly throws her hat into the Paris Hilton arena.......unfortunate and unbelievable. Someone with no talent, skills or humanitarian efforts does not deserve the unbridled interest and frenzy that the supposed reputable media are exibiting. Its disgraceful and an embarrassment to our country really

43. He's right. And no one trusts lightweight Katie Couric for news.

44. The story of Paris Hilton driving on a suspended license and going to jail because she was on probation didnt deserve the time of day, Im sorry but no one with any sense drives on a suspended license, especailly when you are on probation. Dan Rather is right. The idiocy of the news giving so much coverage to this trivial thing that Paris did(Im not saying drunk driving is trivial, drunk drivers should go to jail). has been stupid as anyone can imagine. My nephews best friened was hacked to death along with 20 other American soldiers in Iraq, That barely made the news. That is the sad, important type of story to get lots of news coverage. Not spoiled paris and her immature antics. The Hilton story has been assinine.

45. I agree with Dan. I was shocked to find the story of Paris being taken to court preempting real news on HLN and CNN.

As for Katy, Paris is actually the right story for her. Like the other person said I found Katy to be extremely annoying on Today particulary the fact that she always said "anyway" like a teenager as if to rudely dismiss the topic she just discussed. Her constant use of the word proved to be contagious and Matt started using it as well and does to this day. I don't think they notice it. I was shocked that they expected her to work on a serious news show and were paying her top dollar to do it after she was essentially an entertainment reporter on Today.
