Dan Rather -- Paris Hilton Root of All Media Evil

Dan Rather continued his blowhard tour today, blaming the "dumbing down" and "tarting up" of news -- as he has put it -- on Paris Hilton and the media's blanket coverage of the heiress' jail travails.

Talking to FOX News, Rather slammed the wall-to-wall Paris-in-the-slammer coverage, criticizing his ex-bosses at CBS News for running Hilton stories on the evening news. "There's no empirical evidence that by going with Paris Hilton that [the newscast] attracts a younger audience," said Rather.

Rather tried to deflect criticism of news coverage from his replacement, Katie Couric, to his ex-boss, CBS CEO Les Mooves -- and now, inevitably, to Paris. Kenneth, what's the frequency?

46. Dan was the MAN! Now look who we have to watch on the evening news, Katie Couric. She needs to turning letters on Wheel of Fortune. He's right, why should we have to hear about poor Paris on the evening news and then hear a story about our troops getting blown up in Iraq.

47. Rather is right. But as long as conglomerates run the media, anyone with old money surnames like Hilton, Kennedy, Trump, etc. is going to see their missteps magnified by a media that feeds on the scandalous and salacious. That shouldn't surprise anyone - most of all Paris Hilton.

49. He's right.. If I want to see real news, I'd be disgusted to see it on CBS or any of those networks. If I want to watch "news" like we expect here, I'll go watch the daily 10 or something. The only way Paris Hilton would be real news was if she drove her car off a cliff. Him telling the truth about the networks and their relationship with Paris Hilton is not "Trashing women". I studied journalism in college and decided not to follow it as a career path because real news is never reported, or at least never balanced (hi fox news, I see you!). It will always be guided by money and ratings (or politics). I know of stations in the city where I live who will not cover negative stories on companies who have advertising accounts with the stations. (Same goes for newspapers, etc).

50. He seems like a loose cannon lately, but he has a point. Why is our mainstream news reporting about Paris Hilton? Someone has to stop this madness---there are much more important, relevant news stories that we need to focus on.

51. #15--5Fathoms---I would be willing to bet Dan Rather has more of a life than you or me---he doesn't spend his time reading TMZ.

52. Katie Couric; what a waste of money. At least Dan Rather was worth it.

53. Lets admit it folks we just love to here about the trials and tribulations of the rich and famous. All the coverage of sleeze day in and day out does keep us more focused on
that than what is really important. I understand that the world news and news in general is much less entertaining. So we opt for the news that in the sceam of things really does not matter. Whether of not Paris Hilton goes crazy while being locked up is really minor
compared to other news. Rather is dead on right.

54. I wish all the major news organizations would refuse to air Paris Hilton stories! They created this media monster. The only way to kill it is to stop giving her a platform.

55. AMEN! ALL PRAISE DAN RATHER. I'M GLAD SOMEONE FINALLY SAID SOMETHING. THE MEDIA AND GOVERNMENT WANT US TO OBSESS ON THIS HEIRHEAD INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON IN THE WORLD.

56. He's right. There are no responsible journilist out there anymore . They rather run a story about paris or britney to cover up what is really going on with the war or with carl rove or the president..........It easy writing and less investigating

57. I watch Katie Couric once or twice and what a mess.

I can't stand the way she talks...almost trying to be sexy
and cute. I hate how she speaks when giving a real news story. ugh...I don't think it is about female reporter or newscasters I just think Katie is not the one...not to mention all the money she makes in one year...something like 14 million a year.

I watch fox and friends in the morning and some of those females have a good way of presenting the news.

They thought that she would bring in the females who watch the Today show (which I never have watched)
and would bring the females to the evening news...
entirely different audiences.

58. MR RATHER WHY COVER THE HILTON STORY ON CBS? ITS ONLY THE HOTTEST STORY ON THE PLANET RIGHT NOW. IS IT RIDICULUS? YES BUT YOUR JOB FIRST AND FOREMOST IS ABOUT RATINGS NOT THE INTEGRITY OF NEWSREADERS

59. Ditto Dan! I had my television on MSNBC when she was to appear in court- and what really pissed me off was that Paris' coverage was all over - yet the trial of the woman that killed her husband was on the ticker on the bottom, as well as the story of the young girl abducted from Target....It is just a shame -- Paris going to jail is entertainment - not NEWS!!! My god...we have children dying everyday from serving their country and yet Paris is top news.....ah well....

60. dan rather is so right. i wonder how many people on this board right now, know what's being going on with the war, or how many soldiers we've lost in the past few days. and i wonder why more young people today aren't outraged that their government is slowly but surely taking away their freedoms. this is what our country has become. we're a bunch of idiots for even giving this paris hilton story 2 seconds worth of our time when there are real issues going on in the world. this is exactly what our government wants, they want us all to be a bunch of idiot paris hilton wannabe's and they're succeeding.
