Dan Rather -- Paris Hilton Root of All Media Evil

Dan Rather continued his blowhard tour today, blaming the "dumbing down" and "tarting up" of news -- as he has put it -- on Paris Hilton and the media's blanket coverage of the heiress' jail travails.

Talking to FOX News, Rather slammed the wall-to-wall Paris-in-the-slammer coverage, criticizing his ex-bosses at CBS News for running Hilton stories on the evening news. "There's no empirical evidence that by going with Paris Hilton that [the newscast] attracts a younger audience," said Rather.

Rather tried to deflect criticism of news coverage from his replacement, Katie Couric, to his ex-boss, CBS CEO Les Mooves -- and now, inevitably, to Paris. Kenneth, what's the frequency?

62. Dan Rather is a liar and a liberal biased presenter of facts. What he did to Network News was shameful. Turned it into his own little empire, making himself lead Commentator, Managing Editor and Executive Producer all at the same time. How isolating and self absorbed was that?

Rather tried to "make" the news, and become the news rather than simply just report it as it happened. He spun it, biased it, bent it and shaped it into what he wanted people to think.

He's nothing but a lucky ass Texas cub reporter who happened to be at the Kennedy Assination...he came with no extraoridinary credentials or experience, other than being at the right place and time once. Than he was glorified.

And than he lied in memogate. Shameful. Now he cries about how news aint the same anymore...well, Rather sit back and take credit mr managing editor for how you led to its shaping of what it is now.

Dan, you are a has been and few are interested anymore since you were exposed as a liar.

63. It never ceases to amaze me. Just when I think I will never have to listen
to another disgraced, ranting, liberal journalist, here comes Dan!
Still seems to be burnt by the fact he lost his job for reporting LIES.

However Dan, I did see several news organizations report the facts about the
disturbed Judge and poorly run LA County jail and system.

64. Dan your definitely right...Katie Couric is in over her head, The ratings are going to go no where but down. It is what it is, and that is the way it is. They will never ever gain a younger audience, because a younger audience does not watch news or read a newspaper....its that simple..hellloooooooo..the Internet is where its all at, and the media is so scattered that its a wonder the 'evening news' is even on. The advertisers will place their dollars where it is all at, and it is not with Katie Couric. Fade to black...

65. CBS needs to fire Les Moonves. Hiring Katie is a disaster. I'm a woman, the woman is an idiot. People don't trust or watch her.

66. When celebrity magazines and websites (like TMZ) cover Paris Hilton, that's understandable. That's what they're supposed to do. But when the legitimate news networks go wall to wall with coverage of Paris, that's ridiculous. Katie Couric is a disaster at CBS. She was hired because she's "cheesecake", a bubble headed reporter who looks nice on TV. She was not hired because of serious news credibility. The saturation of coverage of Paris was totally unnecssary.

68. Dan Rather is a useless has-been!!!!! He totally sucked!!! Katie is no better, but at least she has some backbone, where as Dan doesn't. CBS needs to get a trustworthy, reliable, HONEST reporter for the CBS News. NONE of which they have now!!! CBS, ,,,,,,,get friggin' real!!!! Where is Walter Cronkite

70. Dan Rather will be remembered as a true American hero. The vituprity from the right alone proves his credentials. Reporting the story that ruined him was an incredible act of courage. The story was true but the memos were reinactments. Imagine a talking head telling the truth. God help us. Katie is a pig.

73. I am really glad in a way for all the publicity Paris' going to court and jail is getting. Especially now - just as you would think the story was going to die down, more things come out it seems. Now the value I see in all this being on the news is that it gives parents and teachers everywhere a chance to discuss Paris in relation perhaps to drivers' ed., the dangers of drinking and driving, promiscuous sex, drugs, mental illness, the justice system, etc. etc. LARGE ISSUES that many "ordinary" people face in our own lives even though we are not celebrities, rich, thin, whatever! Paris has shown the world how NOT TO BEHAVE and the consequences of her bad behavior.

But the best part of all this is how it has exposed POSSIBLE CORRUPT behavior on the part of Sheriff Baca, the unequal treatment of other inmates in the justice system and the dire need for an investigation into the medical care given others in the jails and hospitals in Los Angeles (where I live).

Hopefully too it reminds everyone to be as careful as possible when they are out driving - esp. in L.A. where the traffic is horrible and the vast majority of drivers are not paying attention as they should (blasting music, applying makeup, reading and on the cell phones of course) whether they're stuck in traffic or speeding whenever they get the chance. Then how many other LIndseys, Britneys, Paris's and Nicoles driving drunk, drugged or hungover on top of all the previous distractions mentioned.

It is really a miracle there aren't lots more fatal accidents than there are in this city and the police really need to investigate these clubs and patrol all around them, especially around closing and into the wee a.m. hours!

75. #29 you are right about the Anna Nicole Smith story coverage versus the twit Paris Hilton. Hilton is a flash in the pan versus Anna.

I think the major news channels are looking at what people are watching and we are bored with the news. So they are introducing the hype crap from hollywood. Major news reporting maybe needs a new spin. I am not a journalist but someone has to find the new edge to hold people.

I am not a loyal fan to any news agency. I tried Katie Couric for a few weeks and she doesn't do it for me. Sorry Katie, loved you in your previous role but you just don't hold me. Brian Williams is usually where I end up. I like his style. I find trust in him.

I never watched Dan Rather. He grated on me. Does he have valid points? Yes! I would love for Tom Brokaw to weigh in on the reporting issue also.
