It didn't work, but photogs did get the unsuccessful hand job on film.

Vince Vaughn just couldn't keep his head above water yesterday -- finding it nearly impossible to keep his balance on a Jet Ski in the rough sea.
The plumping actor was filmed in the waters off Malibu, just down the beach from ex Jennifer Aniston's house ... where he attempted to thrust himself onto a wave rider not once, but twice -- knocking it over and slipping off each time. Vaughn overboard!
Third time was the charm for slippery Vinnie, and he was eventually ferried from the beach to a waiting boat, as a crowd on the sand cheered his successful mounting. And who wouldn't?

Vince "Super Scruffy" Vaughn appears to be making a point while on a stroll in L.A. -- that grooming is something that other people do.
The facial hair violation is so acute that Scruffy's less hirsute (and unidentified) companion can't bear to even look at his follicularly-messy friend, and suffered some form of gastric distress when he did.

Paris Hilton and Vince Vaughn doubled up this weekend, playing a little Texas Hold 'Em in a celeb poker tournament.
The two were joined by Don Cheadle, Jason Alexander, Nicky Hilton and Mekhi Phifer at the World Poker Tour Invitational at Commerce Casino Saturday night. Hilton's arch-nemesis, Shanna Moakler, was also there, but the only thing they threw down were bad hands.
Card shark Jennifer Tilly, nicknamed "The Unabombshell," showed off an impressive rack ... of chips.

A solo Cameron Diaz, a shy Leonardo DiCaprio and a fast and furious Lindsay Lohan all contributed to the Oscar after-party madness late last night.
The exclusive party, held in the Hollywood Hills by nightlife impresario Brent Bolthouse and super agents Rick Yorn and Patrick Whitesell, was the place to be seen, with swinging single Vince Vaughn and basketball legend Reggie Miller, bushy-browed Martin Scorsese and a boob-a-licious Courtney Love -- who gave Jennifer Hudson's cleavage a lesson in gravity -- all hitting up the bash. Despite going public last week with new beau Terrence Howard, Naomi Campbell arrived sans date.
Not everyone was solo though -- "Heroes" hottie and resident psycho Ali Larter hooked up with her onetime "Varsity Blues" co-star Amy Smart, Dog the Bounty Hunter showed up with wife Beth, and Nicky Hilton held tight to her boyfriend of the month.
